This song, written by Jane Mackay and Margaret Ritchie in 1966, is fast becoming part of the age-old oral tradition of sea songs. Especially popular with the Fourways Club (for the over-60s), young people too are now carrying on the tradition. The Cromarty Song They call me a wanderer, Wherever I roam, And yet my thoughts linger In my old Highland home. It’s the home of my childhood, The land of my birth, It’s a wee place in Scotland, On the Cromarty Firth. All the world’s seven wonders, Not one can compare To the view from the Sutor; It really is rare. As you stand midst the heather, Far below you can see All the beauty of Scotland, In my Cromarty. Now the people are happy, So friendly and kind. It really does grieve you To leave them behind. But young folk must grow up And then must depart, But the home of their childhood Lies deep in their heart. And now I must leave you, And bid you adieu. My feet they will lead me To pastures anew. But my heart’s in the Highlands, In the town by the sea, In the home of my childhood, My own Cromarty. « Back to full list of poems Comments about The Cromarty SongI teach at Ferintosh Primary School and we have a wee choir which hope to go to the Saltire Scots Song competition in Perth this June. (Last year we came third.) The adjudicator at the time said it would be nice if the choirs could have sung a song from their own area... which we would like to do this year, but are having trouble finding any suitable songs connected with the Black Isle. Then we came upon this one......! Can anyone put us in touch with the composers/whoever owns the copyright? Also, does it have a melody and it is written down? Please help - we'd love to sing it at the competition.
Added by Margo Fraser on 23/03/2009 Hi Margo. I'm sure Jane Patience, who lives in Avoch, would be delighted to give you permission. I'll put you in touch with her. The song does have a simple melody, though it's probably not written down anywhere - it just gets handed down orally and is usually sung without accompaniment here in Cromarty. I'll give you a ring to see what we can do, if Jane's happy about your proposal.
