CROMARTY, living by the sea
Sea change - by Jane Verburg, 2½ years in Cromarty

Do you know what it’s like to live with the sea

in your hair,

inside your head, knitted into your sleep?

Its noiselessness, noisiness, tied to your fingertips,

its seaweed rolled in strandlines strung to your toes,

its thumbprint pebbles caught in the curve

of your turn,

its sea glass in your pockets,

its curlews lifting in wide ribbons wrapped in

the palm of your hand.

Do you? Do you? I do.

It is amazing how this lovely poem has touched so many people-me included. I read it in Coast magazine and have used lines of it within my paintings, it really touches the soul. As someone in Canada put 'you wrap it up so beautifully'

Love the poem - it exactly expresses how living by the sea 'gets you'.

Thank you for these lovely comments. I am really happy because the magazine, 'Coast' has a piece based on this poem in the October issue.

I love this poem and am just about to paint it on the walls of my spare bedroom, with a panoramic view of Torbay through the window beyond - thankyou! I am a mad keen seaglass collector so love that bit best.

I just saw your poem in Coast and love it too! I live by the sea as well (in eastern Canada) and you wrap it all up so beautifully. Thank-you.

Apologies to Jane because I've only just corrected a typing error that has apparently been in her poem all this time! It's correct now, thank goodness.

I read this poem in a free paper whilst I was visiting a friend on Lewis. It summed up so beautifully how I feel about the sea that I copied it into a small notebook which I took travelling with me for a year and half. I have reread it many times. Thank you.
